With so many castles around it was hard to chose!
Rob and I went to check out the The Castle of Beynac which is is one of the best preserved and one of the most famous of the Périgord.
It was built in the 12th century by the barons of Beynac to control the Dordogne river and the surrounding lands. The heavy defensive walls were once guarded by King Richard I “the Lion-Heart” of England, Simon de Montfort, leader of one of the crusades, the Lords of Beynac and the four baronneries of Périgord that presided in the castle’s room of state. It is sometimes said that deep inside the heart of the fortress, the echo of the battles of the Hundred Years War continue to resonate.
Anyway, the view from the castle is spectacular!
And we’re off to our next stop
